K. G. Subramanyan

K. G. Subramanyan was born in Kerala on February 15, 1924. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Presidency College in Chennai. In 1948, he graduated from Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan, where he studied under notable teachers such as Benode Behari Mukherjee, Nandalal Bose, and Ramkinkar Baij. Subramanyan was a prolific artist known for his versatility across various mediums, including painting, pottery, weaving, and glass painting. He believed in the importance of Indian traditions and often incorporated folklore, myths, local techniques, and stories into his work. As a member of the Baroda M.S. Fine Arts Faculty, he inspired generations of students. In his later years, Subramanyan focused on terracotta and pottery. He was one of the leading artists in India’s post-independence exploration of identity through art. In 1955, he received a British Council Research Fellowship to attend the Slade School of Art at the University of London. Throughout his career, he held over fifty solo exhibitions, including shows organized by the Seagull Foundation for the Arts in collaboration with the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai and the Harrington Street Arts Centre in Kolkata.
