Jogen Chowdhury

Born in 1939 in Faridpur, Bengal, is renowned for his distinctive fusion of traditional imagery and contemporary sensibilities. He skillfully blends urban self-awareness with rich Bengali influences. His early works emphasize figuration, characterized by a simple yet iconic presence set against an elusive background, while his later pieces are described as more personalized and subtle. Chowdhury studied at the Government College of Art and Crafts in Kolkata from 1955 to 1960 and subsequently attended L’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris on a French Government Scholarship. Although he was involved in leftist literary circles during his college years, his artistic vision remained firmly rooted in his cultural heritage rather than the prevailing intellectual trends of the time.

His notable solo exhibitions include “A Calligraphy of Touch and Gaze” in 2008 and “Abahoman: Flowing Life” in 2007. He has been awarded the Prix le France de la Jeune Peinture in 1966 and the Kalidas Sanman in 2001. Chowdhury’s work continues to resonate in the art world today.
