Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya, a luminary in the world of art curation and literature, was born in Bally, nestled in the culturally vibrant Howrah district of West Bengal. A graduate of Calcutta University, Jyotirmoy’s professional journey began in the realm of academia, where he pursued teaching. However, driven by an innate passion for exploring broader horizons, he soon transitioned to the corporate sector and moved to Bangalore.

It was during his time in Bangalore that Jyotirmoy’s deep appreciation for art found a new dimension. Immersing himself in the rich artistic traditions of Bengal, he began curating and exhibiting art independently. This phase marked the beginning of his journey as a collector and connoisseur, igniting a lifelong commitment to preserving and promoting India’s artistic heritage.

Upon his return to Kolkata, Jyotirmoy turned his focus entirely toward art and literature, carving a niche for himself as a distinguished curator and writer. His expertise spans the works of legendary artists such as Jamini Roy, Akbar Padamsee, Himmat Shah, Akkitham Narayanan, Jogen Chowdhury, Lalu Prasad Shaw and many others. His exhibitions have not only showcased their brilliance but have also brought nuanced perspectives to their contributions in the broader context of Indian art.

One of the most crucial periods of his career was the time he spent with the legendary film actor and writer, Soumitra Chatterjee. They collaborated closely, which ignited his passion for showcasing art through film. Another significant influence in his career has been Amala Shankar. These renowned artists have inspired him to explore the realm of filmmaking. He has directed acclaimed biographical documentaries about iconic artists, including Manu Parekh, Himmat Shah, Rabin Mondal, and Akkitham Narayanan. These documentaries offer viewers an intimate glimpse into the lives, inspirations, and artistic journeys of these remarkable individuals.

As a writer and editor, Jyotirmoy has enriched the field of art history with his meticulous research and storytelling. His publications include seminal works such as Mythological Oil Paintings of Bengal: 19th & Early 20th Century, Unish Sataker Shilpi Bamapada Bandhopadhyay, Paintings and Graphics by Ramendra Nath Chakravorty, Jamini Roy: Candid Sketches, Unish Sataker Kathkhodai Shilpi Trailakyanath Dev and his latest publications, Bamapada Banerjee – The Lost Gem of Bengal Art and Engraved Epic: Early Bengal Prints of Ramayana. Each book is a testament to his dedication to documenting and celebrating the multifaceted dimensions of Bengal’s artistic legacy.
