Chandra Bhattacharjee

Chandra Bhattacharjee was born on November 18, 1961, in Patuli, Bardhaman, West Bengal. He graduated with first-class honors from the Indian College of Art and Draughtsmanship in 1986, the same year he received a gold medal from Rabindra Bharati University for excellence in fine arts. He began his career as a billboard artist before rising to prominence as a well-known painter. Chandra has participated in several significant group exhibitions organized by prestigious venues such as Gallery Threshold, Palette in New Delhi, Sumukha Gallery in Bangalore, The Guild and Tao in Mumbai, and Gallery 88 in Kolkata. His works are held in numerous collections worldwide and have been featured in various auctions. Through his paintings, Chandra seeks to capture the vastness of the landscape. His large-scale photographs, mostly long shots, reflect this perspective, but as a painter, he inevitably focuses on the minutiae of nature. Nothing is trivial in his landscapes. The powerful presence of nature seeps into corners of his mind he never knew existed. This intense observation has become an integral part of him; the acrid wind and the scrutinizing gaze of his eye are extensions of what he perceives and feels around him. His sensitivity is mirrored in the fragility of an exposed flower. He translates these feelings and forms into visual representations, sometimes literally and at other times metaphorically.
