Suhas Roy was born in 1936 in Bengal. He graduated in painting in 1958 from the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship in Kolkata. In 1965, he travelled to Paris on an exchange program supported by the French government, where he studied graphic art and murals. In 1960, Roy became a member of the Society of Contemporary Artists in Calcutta. From 1971 to 1973, he served as the principal of the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship. After that, he became a lecturer in painting at Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan. Roy’s work often focuses on the female face and form, with his characters portrayed in a romanticized manner. He explores a dreamlike world that balances sensuality and honesty. His themes are influenced by everyday life, yet they are also deeply rooted in fantasy. The intricate and complex textures of life are depicted in his work as both mystical and dark, with the mystical aspect stemming from his interpretations of the ‘unknown.’
