Sunil Das was an Indian painter known for his dynamic expressionist style and a career that spanned over five decades. A recipient of the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours, Das gained early fame for his series of paintings centred around horses and bullfighters. His ability to capture movement, raw emotion, and energy with rapid, forceful brushstrokes set him apart in the world of contemporary Indian art. Born in Kolkata, West Bengal, Sunil Das showed an affinity for art from a young age. He excelled at the Government College of Art & Craft in Kolkata. His talent was recognised early when he won a French government scholarship to study at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This international exposure broadened his artistic perspective and introduced him to various European artistic movements, which influenced his later works.
