Madhvi Parekh, born in 1942 in Sanjaya, Gujarat, is a self-taught artist. Her paintings reflect her childhood memories, blending elements of fantasy with nostalgic scenes to create a surreal, dreamlike quality. From 1970 to 1972, she studied Fine Arts in Paris on a scholarship from the French government.
Her work is inspired by rural India but is characterised by a contemporary twist. Since 1972, she has been exhibiting her artwork internationally. In 1979, she received the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi. Shortly thereafter, she completed a residency fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Centre in Provincetown, Massachusetts. In 2003, she was honoured with the Whirlpool Women’s Achievement Award in the field of Fine Art. Beginning with many solos, Parekh participated in notable group shows such as Play Turkey and Yugoslavia in 1985, Watercolours by Four Women Artists, Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal (1987, and Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai in 1987.
