David Malakar's paintings explore the city during the night, the enigma of darkness lit by the yellow light of a lamp. Working primarily in charcoal and pastels on paper, he explores and portrays the nocturnal sights and sounds mixed with a tinge of fantasy and imagination.
The myriad appearances of the world cloaked in darkness have found stories and meanings in his work, which offer a deeper understanding of contemporary times.
A member of the Society of Contemporary Artists, Kolkata, David has participated in many group shows in India. He was awarded the National Award by the Lalit Kala Akademi in 2020 amongst other awards. David studied at the Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata, followed by a post-graduation from Benares Hindu University.
